CELLULITE: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
By
Patricia Bottero, CEO and Founder of eHarmonie.com

Ever wonder about that stuff they call "Orange Peel Skin?" More importantly, do you know how to get rid of it? Take our quick quiz and find out!

1. Cellulite is:

     A. A condition that you're born with so your doomed to have
         "cottage cheese thighs" forever.
     B. An accumulation of toxic wastes within the connective
tissues of the skin, resulting in the creation of pockets of
dead fat cells, water and toxins.
     C. A new cellular calling plan.

The answer is (of course) B. When waste and excess water accumulates under the skin it causes bulging which results in a lumpy appearance. Cellulite most often appears in the lower part of the body but can appear in the upper abdomen and upper arm. Symptoms of cellulite can include a feeling of heaviness, tightness in the affected areas-especially in the legs-and the skin may be especially sensitive if it is pinched, pressed or vigorously massaged.

2. Cellulite is caused by:

     A. Stress
     B. Birth Control Pills
     C. Puberty
     D. An unbalanced diet

This is sort of a trick question because the answer is really all of the above! All of these conditions can signal that at there is an imbalance in the body which is the kind of environment cellulite can thrive in. Your lymphatic system-which is the way in which your body eliminates waste-plays an important role in maintaining your body's internal balance. Your liver also plays an important role in filtering out impurities and regulating hormones. When these systems become overloaded they no longer function properly, leaving the skin cells to try and deal with an excessive amount of toxins.

3. The best way to get rid of cellulite is:

     A. Eat a healthy diet
     B. Exercise
     C. Professional spa therapies
     D. Develop a good home skin care regimen

If you said all of the above for this one, you've got it! A combination of good nutrition, exercise and topical treatments that you can have applied at a spa or apply at home will help you rid your body of this gunk! Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, herbs, herb teas and fresh juices to help the lymphatic and digestive systems do their jobs. Drink lots of water to help flush away toxins. Choose exercises like cycling and walking which create a "pumping" motion that massages the tissues involved and increases blood flow. Visit your spa for a seaweed or aromatic body wrap, both or which are great for naturally increasing blood circulation and perspiration to encourage the body to eliminate wastes, toxins, and excess water. Massages are also a great way to stimulate circulation!

At home, add bath salts and essential oils with high mineral content and diuretic properties to your water. While you're soaking, exfoliate your skin to get rid of dead skin cells and increase blood circulation. Finally, make sure your skin care regimen includes products that contain extract of ivy and niacin which will greatly increase circulation in damaged areas. The essential oils of Grapefruit, Juniper, Cypress, Rosemary and Patchouli will also help with drainage and the breaking up of congestion in the cellulite pocket.

Remember: Cellulite is the result of several body functions slowing down over a long period of time, so it will take time and discipline to treat it effectively. Choose your treatments, dietary changes and exercise routine with careful consideration of your lifestyle. Be faithful and consistent to your goal and you will see results!
