| What is Cellulite?
If you ask any woman she can probably give you one of a hundred nicknames
for this problem such as "cottage cheese thighs" and "orange peel skin."
Cellulite has been defined as
an accumulation of toxic wastes within the connective tissues
of the skin which create pockets of fat cells, water and
toxins. These pockets result in a pitting and bulging of the
skin, creating a "lumpy" appearance. Cellulite is mostly
located in the lower part of the body, from the stomach to
the ankle, but can appear in the upper abdomen and upper
arm. When adipocytes—normal, healthy fat cells—become
part of a cellulite pocket, they have atrophied and are no
longer actively participating in the removal of toxins and
water from the skin.
Symptoms of cellulite can include a feeling of heaviness, tightness
in the affected areas—especially in the legs—and
the skin may be especially sensitive if it is pinched, pressed
or vigorously massaged. These symptoms can occur when nerve endings
become smothered and irritated in the cellulite pockets.
What Causes Cellulite?
Cellulite can appear for many different reasons such as
puberty, menopause, stress, birth control pills, pregnancy
and an unbalanced diet. Before you throw your hands in the
air and decide there's no hope of preventing cellulite from paying
you a visit, try thinking of it this way: these conditions merely suggest
that there is an imbalance in the body. When
an imbalance exists, a condition like cellulite might occur if balance
is not restored. Your lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining
that balance. It is the way that
your body gets rid of waste and toxins. Your liver also plays
an important role in filtering out impurities and regulating hormones.
When these systems become overloaded, they
no longer function properly, leaving skin cells to try and deal with
an excessive amount of toxins. Lucky for us, a
combination of healthy lifestyle choices and effective
treatments have been proven to combat this lumpy nemesis!
How to get rid of it!
The truth is, many of us know what cellulite looks like, but we're less
familiar with why it develops and—most importantly—how we can eliminate
or reduce its appearance. The good news is that cellulite can be eliminated
or reduced with a combination of good nutrition, exercise and topical treatments
that you can have applied at a spa or apply at
home. Below are some examples of how you can fight
cellulite and win!
Eat Smart
-
Choose anti-cellulite foods that cleanse the body's lymphatic and digestive
system. Make sure to include
lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, herbs, herb teas
and fresh juices.
-
Avoid saturated fats and oils, wheat, excess salt, preservatives, refined
carbohydrates like pasta and sugar, tinned or packaged foods, caffeine
and red meat. These foods tend to overload the lymphatic system and the
liver creating a high level of toxicity in the body.
-
Drink lots of water to help your body flush away toxins and burn fat. A
minimum of eight 8-ounce glasses a day is essential to weight loss and
healthy skin. Remember, your lymphatic system and liver are constantly
filtering out toxins, but if there's no water to flush them away they are
stored in your skin cells where they cause lots of damage. So drink up!
Exercise
-
Physical activity will increase your circulation and lymphatic flow. The
best sports heavily involve the legs (where cellulite tends to appear)
such as bicycling, walking or gymnastics. These exercises create an internal
pump that massages the tissue and really increases blood flow.
Try Professional Body Care Therapies
-
Seaweed or aromatic body wraps are ideal for naturally increasing blood
circulation and perspiration to encourage the body to eliminate wastes,
toxins, and excess water. Stay away from treatments that use cellophane
or any other tight bandages. These treatments interfere with the
natural fluid circulation of your body.
-
Have a massage! Several forms of this therapy, including aromatic massage,
lymphatic drainage, and hydrotherapy all work to stimulate circulation
and break down fatty deposits. Cellulite massages increase circulation
on localized area and encourages the body to eliminate toxins! Hydrotherapy
works in the same way as a manual cellulite massage with the added benefit
of your body buoyancy allowing a deeper work. Think how good you'll feel
all over afterward!
Take A Bath
-
The bath ritual is the perfect place to combat cellulite. Add bath salts
and essential oils with high mineral content and diuretic properties to
your water to help your body relax and detoxify. While you're soaking,
don't forget to exfoliate! You're not only getting rid of dead skin cells
but you're increasing blood circulation, which helps your body get rid
of more excess water and toxins!
Use Essential Oils And Creams
-
Aromatherapy has been time tested over the ages to be an effective ally
in combating cellulite. Creams with extract of ivy and niacin will radically
increase circulation in damaged areas. The essential oils of grapefruit,
juniper, cypress, rosemary and patchouli, when massaged into affected areas,
will help with drainage and the breaking up of congestion in the cellulite
pocket. Some essential oils also possess diuretic properties that encourage
excess water loss.
Cellulite doesn't just appear overnight. It is the normal result of several
body functions slowing down over a long period of time. The process of
treating it will take time and dedication. Choose your treatments, dietary
changes and exercise routine with careful consideration of your lifestyle.
Be faithful and consistent to your goal and you will see results. The lifestyle
changes you make to treat cellulite will add to the overall improvement
of your health. The great advantage of being concerned with cellulite is
that its remedies will also contribute to your overall health and well-being.
